Gold coins are one of the easiest assets to turn into cash in New York, and one of the most overlooked. Most people remember the gold chains and rings in the jewelry box. Far fewer remember the American Gold Eagle a relative gave them, the Krugerrand bought as an investment years ago, or the roll of Maple Leafs sitting in a safe deposit box. Whether you want to sell outright or pawn your gold coins for a short-term loan, here is how it works at Unlimited Buyers in the Diamond District.

Sell or Pawn: Which Is Right for You?
There are two ways to raise money against gold coins, and the right one depends on whether you want the coins back.
- Selling gives you the full value of the coins today. You walk out with payment and the transaction is complete. This is the better choice if the coins were an investment you are ready to cash in, or if you would rather have the money than the metal.
- Pawning (a collateral loan) means we hold the coins as security, you receive a loan against their value, and you get the coins back when you repay. There is no credit check and nothing is reported to credit bureaus. This is the better choice if you need money for a limited time and want to keep the coins long term.
Life does not always give you notice. Unexpected medical bills, a family emergency, a security deposit that is due before a paycheck arrives, or a business opportunity with a short window are all reasons people bring coins to us. Gold coins are ideal collateral because their value is easy to verify and easy to track.
Which Gold Coins Can You Sell or Pawn?
Any genuine gold coin has value. The most common coins we see in New York include:
- American Gold Eagles and Buffalos in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes
- Canadian Maple Leafs, which are .9999 fine gold
- South African Krugerrands, the world’s first modern bullion coin
- Austrian Philharmonics, British Britannias, Mexican Pesos and Chinese Pandas
- Pre-1933 US gold such as Saint-Gaudens and Liberty Double Eagles, which often carry collector value above their gold content
- Graded coins in PCGS or NGC holders
You do not need to know the specifications of your coins before you come in. Our appraisers identify, test and weigh every coin in front of you. If you have paperwork, receipts or grading certificates, bring them, but they are not required.
How We Test and Value Gold Coins
Every coin goes through the same process:
- Authentication. We check weight, diameter and thickness against mint specifications and use XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing where needed. XRF analysis reads the metal content without damaging the coin, and it identifies plated or counterfeit pieces immediately.
- Weight and purity. Coins are weighed on certified scales. Eagles are 22 karat (91.67% gold), Maple Leafs and Buffalos are 24 karat, Krugerrands are 22 karat. The pure gold content is what sets the base value.
- Live spot price. We pull the current gold spot price at the time of your visit and show you the number we are using. You can see today’s price in the sidebar of this page.
- Premiums. Bullion coins trade at a small premium over melt. Rare dates, low mintages, high grades and certified coins can trade far above melt, and we pay for that when the market supports it.
How Much Can You Borrow Against Gold Coins?
Loan amounts are based on the verified value of the coins. Because gold coins have a transparent, published market price, they typically qualify for higher loan-to-value ratios than jewelry, where the resale value depends on more variables. You choose the term, you pay interest only for the time you use the loan, and your coins are stored securely until you redeem them.
What to Bring
- The coins themselves, in their original tubes, capsules or holders if you have them
- A government-issued photo ID (required by New York State for both purchases and loans)
- Any grading certificates, receipts or assay cards
