Why You Should Sell Your Old Watch

Unlimited Buyers · August 30, 2022 · 4 min read

A luxury watch is one of the few things you own that can be worth more today than the day you bought it. If you have an older Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet sitting in a drawer, it may be time to find out what it is worth. Here are the most common reasons our customers in New York decide to sell an old watch, and what to know before you do.

1. You Need Money Quickly

The most common reason is the simplest. Medical bills, a move, tuition, a gap between jobs, or an opportunity that will not wait. A luxury watch is a liquid asset. Unlike a car or real estate, it can be evaluated and paid for in a single visit. At Unlimited Buyers, a watch appraisal takes minutes and payment is same day. If you are not ready to part with the watch permanently, a collateral loan lets you borrow against it and get it back later.

2. You Want to Upgrade

Tastes change. The 36mm watch you bought fifteen years ago may feel small next to the 41mm models in every ad, or you may simply want a different complication, dial or metal. Selling the current watch funds a meaningful part of the next one. Because we buy watches outright rather than on consignment, you get the money now rather than waiting months for a listing to sell.

3. You Never Wear It

Many of the watches we buy have not been worn in years. They were gifts, retirement presents, or impulse purchases that did not fit the owner’s daily life. A watch that stays in a box is a depreciating asset in one sense (unserviced movements dry out) and an appreciating one in another (some references keep climbing). Either way, unused value is value you could put to work.

4. The Value Has Gone Up

The secondary market for certain watches has climbed sharply over the past decade. Steel sports models from Rolex, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, the Patek Philippe Nautilus and Aquanaut, and discontinued references from Omega and Cartier regularly sell above their original retail price. Demand is driven by limited production, waiting lists at authorized dealers, and collectors worldwide. If your watch is one of these, selling at a market high is a perfectly good reason on its own.

5. Letting Go of an Old Chapter

Watches carry memories. Some are good. Some belong to a marriage, a job or a relationship that has ended. Selling a watch tied to a period you have moved past is a practical way to close the chapter and put the value toward something you will actually enjoy.

What Determines What Your Watch Is Worth

Every watch is evaluated individually, but these factors move the number the most:

  • Brand and reference. The specific model number matters more than the brand name alone.
  • Condition. Original, unpolished cases and crisp bezels command premiums. Heavy polishing, replacement dials or aftermarket parts reduce value.
  • Box and papers. The original warranty card, box and service records can add a meaningful percentage, particularly on modern Rolex and Patek Philippe.
  • Service history. A recently serviced movement is worth more than one that needs work.
  • Market demand. We price against current secondary-market sales, not against retail.

Before You Sell

  • Gather the box, papers, extra links and receipts if you have them. Do not worry if you do not; we buy watches without them every day.
  • Do not polish the watch or have it “cleaned up” first. Collectors prefer original surfaces.
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID, which New York State requires for every purchase.
