Why Sell Your Engagement Ring?

Unlimited Buyers · July 4, 2022 · 4 min read

An engagement ring is usually the most valuable piece of jewelry a person owns, and after a divorce, a broken engagement or an inheritance, it can also be the hardest to know what to do with. Selling it is a legitimate, practical option that thousands of New Yorkers choose every year. Here is why it makes sense, what your ring is actually worth, and how to sell it without leaving money on the table.

Reason 1: The Value Is Real and Significant

An engagement ring is not costume jewelry. A center diamond, a platinum or gold mounting and any side stones add up to a serious asset. A one-carat diamond in a good setting can be worth thousands of dollars on the secondary market, and larger or higher-quality stones considerably more. If you need money for a fresh start, a move, legal fees or simply to reinvest, the ring is one of the most liquid things you own.

Reason 2: Closing the Chapter

A ring tied to a relationship that ended is a reminder you see every time you open the drawer. Many of our customers tell us the decision to sell felt heavier than the sale itself, and that afterward they felt lighter. Converting the ring into something forward-looking, whether that is savings, travel or a piece of jewelry you choose for yourself, is a healthy way to move on.

Reason 3: Inherited Rings You Will Never Wear

Not every inherited ring fits your style or your finger. Keeping it in a safe deposit box costs money and gives you nothing. Selling it honors the value your relative left you rather than letting it sit unused. If a family disagrees about what to do, a professional appraisal at least gives everyone an honest number to work from.

What Determines the Value of an Engagement Ring

  • The center diamond. Carat weight, color, clarity and cut, known as the 4Cs. A GIA or AGS grading report confirms these and increases buyer confidence, which increases the offer.
  • Shape and cut quality. Round brilliants are the most liquid. Well-cut fancy shapes (oval, cushion, emerald) also sell strongly.
  • The mounting. Platinum and 18K gold settings are valued for their metal, and signed mountings from Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Harry Winston or Van Cleef & Arpels carry a brand premium.
  • Side stones and craftsmanship. Halo settings, pavé bands and matched side diamonds add to the total.
  • Condition. Chipped stones or worn prongs reduce value slightly; a professional buyer accounts for the cost of repair.

What a Ring Sells For vs. What It Cost

Retail engagement rings carry a large markup over their wholesale value, so the resale price is always lower than the original purchase price. That is true everywhere and for every ring. What matters is getting the highest resale value available, which means selling to a buyer who values the diamond as a diamond and the setting as a setting, rather than a gold buyer who weighs the whole ring as scrap.

Where to Sell an Engagement Ring in NYC

  • Diamond District buyers pay immediately and have gemologists on staff to grade the stone properly.
  • Consignment and online marketplaces can take months and charge fees of 15 to 30 percent.
  • Jewelry stores often offer store credit rather than cash.
  • Pawn shops typically lend or buy at a fraction of true value.

Before You Sell

  • Bring the grading report, receipt and any appraisal you have. If you do not have them, we grade the diamond on-site.
  • Do not remove the diamond from the setting yourself.
  • Consider a collateral loan if you need money now but are not sure about selling.
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID.
